Spinecare Introduction
Finding a Spine Surgeon

The Experience: Your best bet is to find a spine surgeon who has a practice limited to spine surgery who is very experience in spine surgery and has obtained specialized training and credentialing such as a Diplomate or Fellowship in spine surgery.  If your spine problem is complex do not hesitate to travel to an academic medical center or to a specialist who may be out of your area.

Questions to Ask Your Surgeon

A good surgeon will be wiling to answer your question and will attempt to educate you about other methods of intervention.  A surgeon does not have time to answer an unlimited amount of questions but should be willing to answer enough questions so that you are comfortable with your decision whether to have spine surgery or not.  The questions can be presented over a couple of office visits.  On the first visit strive to get your general questions answered.  Bring more specific questions during your second visit.  Sample questions include:

  • What is my spinal diagnosis?
  • How serious is the condition?
  • What would the natural course of progression of the disorder be if I did not treat the problem?
  • What are my non-surgical treatment options?
  • What are my surgical treatment options?
  • What are the risk and benefits of the treatment options?
  • Why are you recommending this course of treatment over others?
